Physical Description

Physical DescriptionA silver-toned chain with a pewter pendant shaped like a jail cell door, after the pins which became a symbol of the Women's Suffrage Movement. The door has a cross pattern of bars, with a separate chain across the center, and small lock on the right side. There is a small eyehole at the top. The chain is looped through the eyehole at top.

Historical NoteThe pendant is based on the design of the "Jailed for Freedom" pins that the National Women's Party awarded to suffragists who were jailed for picketing the White House in 1917. The original pins were designed by Nina Allender.Custodial History / ProvenanceThis item is material associated with various agencies and offices during the Obama administration and maintained as government property until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
