Physical DescriptionDocuments in a gold wooden frame relating to the recognition of the State of Israel. One document is from Dr. Chaim Weizmann, former President of the World Zionist Organization and friend of President Truman, who wrote the President requesting the United States recognize the new state of Israel. The middle document is a short memo from President Truman, recognizing the de facto authority of the state of Israel. The third document is from new Israeli Prime Minister Ben-Gurion, thanking President Truman for his swift action and support. Along with the documents contained in the frame are two gold medals in honor of the city of Jerusalem. One medal depicts a lion with the word Jerusalem around it in many different languages. The other medal depicts a cityscape of Jerusalem.

Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
