Deb Haaland is an American politician and an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo. In 2012, she served as the Obama campaign's vote director for Native Americans in New Mexico. Haaland was elected chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico in 2015 and won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 and 2020. In 2021, President Joe Biden nominated her for Secretary of the Interior; in March, she was sworn in, becoming the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary.
