Roger Tory Peterson was a distinguished ornithologist and artist. He is known for his field guides for birds which assisted bird watchers with species identification. Peterson is also recognized as one of the founders of the 20th Century environmental movement. In 1980, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
