William Butler Yeats was a celebrated Irish poet who was active in societies focused on Irish literary revival. His first volume of verse was published in 1887 and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923. Yeats was also a politician and believed strongly in an independent Ireland and was elected to the Irish Free State Senate in 1922.
