Odysseus Elytis won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1979. A prominent poet, he focused on bringing modern Greek poetry to the Western World. His first volume of poetry was published in 1936 and his most prominent work, To axion esti was published in 1959. In 1960 To axion esti won the National Book Award for Poetry.
