Kalpen Modi is an American actor, producer, and former civil servant known best by his stage name "Kal Penn." After appearing as an advocate on the first Obama presidential campaign, he was appointed Associate Director in the Office of Public Engagement in 2009. There, he served as the Liaison to Young Americans, the Arts, and Asian American and Pacific Islander communities until 2011. On November 18, 2013, President Obama appointed Penn to serve on the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
