Empress Michiko is a member of the Imperial House of Japan who served as the Empress consort of Japan as the wife of Akihito, the 125th Emperor of Japan reigning from January 7, 1989 to April 30, 2019. As Empress Consort her responsibilities included diplomatic visits to other countries and assisting her husband at events and ceremonies. Her Majesty is also a writer, having published her poems and children's books.
