Municipality of Gorée Island

Gorée Island (Île de Gorée) is one of the districts of the city of Dakar, the capitol of Senegal. Between the 15th and 19th centuries, Gorée was the largest center of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade on the African coast. It has since become a UNESCO World Heritage site and remains a historic site that speaks to the memory of slavery.
