Lee Kuan Yew served as the First Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore from 1959 to 1990. After his presidency, he served in Singapore's Parliament until his death. In December 2004, Lee become "Minister Mentor" and started a year-long campaign called "华语 Cool!" (Mandarin is Cool!) in an attempt to attract young people to learn and speak Mandarin. He served in this position until 2011.
