Inscriptions and MarkingsInscribed on back pages: December 4, 2008 Dear President Elect Obama, In a conversation with my college friend, Darnell, I recalled the book we need in a multi-disciplinary senior seminar. (Henry Adams was a writer, artist, and historian.) Its message centered on how the political process can impact one's values and behavior. We wanted to hold onto the hope that you will be able to navigate Washington's seas without compromising your integrity. Actually, we're counting on it! I'd call this book a tongue-in-cheek, cautionary tale. You'll probably understand its allusions better than I do. (It's a bit less pristine than when newly purchased, as I had to reread it to be sure I had the time book.) Please enjoy, [gifter's signatures] UCR Class of 1964 (Not all of your supporters are young.) January 5, 2009 Dear President-Elect Obama, My college friend, Judy, sent this book to me, and I just finished reading it. Of course it's now even less pristine after I've carried it around for awhile. I concur with her comments. I tried to put myself in the shoes of one soon to be the President of the United States, reading about the politics and social customs of 1880's Washington, D.C. Though dated, I found it timely. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Judy reminded me to tell you that we are both public school educators (now retired) "for many years." My Best wishes to you, [gifter's signature] also University of California at Riverside - class of '64
