Physical DescriptionA decorated white "second line" umbrella with applied patches that represent First Lady Michelle Obama and her interests.
Historical NoteGiven on the occasion of a "pilgrimage" to Georgetown University by the descendants of Nace and Biby Butler, enslaved persons who arrived at Georgetown University in 1838. The gift relayed their items to White House staff from the East Wing Tour line.

The second line consists of people who follow a parade after the main section or first line to enjoy the music, dance, and engage in community. Historically, the second lines began as neighborhood celebrations where organization offered social aid to freed slaves and used the second lines as a form of advertising. In addition, there are second lines are also a part of New Orleans weddings and jazz funerals.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to First Lady Michelle Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
