Physical DescriptionA blue Nomex jacket (.a), with seven embroidered patches sewn on to it. The patches represent various flights of NASA's space shuttle program, in addition to an American flag patch on the left shoulder and the NASA logo over the right breast. The left breast has a patch of velcro sewn to it for a black name patch (.b) embossed with the President's name in gold. Pinned to the upper right breast is a pin (.c) commemorating NASA's space shuttle program.
Historical NoteJanet Kavandi, Director of Flight Crew Operations at Johnson Space Center, presented President Barack Obama with a flight jacket during a visit with the crew of the Space Shuttle Atlantis in the Oval Office on November 1, 2011. The jacket features patches from various space shuttle missions, including the first orbital spaceflight with Columbia (STS-1), and the last orbital spaceflight with Atlantis (STS-135).
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Barack Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.
