Physical DescriptionEight piece espresso set of handled cups and matching saucers that have an aqua body overlaid by gilt lattice work. On the front of each cup is a floral paisley and an illustration of a person riding an elephant. The exterior rim has a fuschia base with continued gilt lattice. The interior of the rim is decorated with a yellow band with green borders that are divided into chevrons by more gilt lattice. Inside the yellow are gold dot decorations. The rim of the saucers are aqua with matching gilt lattice and have a fuschia center containing the same paisley and elephant decor as the cups.
Historical NoteReceived on the occasion of a working visit to the White House by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on September 27, 2013. The design and motifs on the set tell the story of Emperor Jahangir and Noor Jahan, who crossed the snowy passes of the Pir Panjal to spend summer months in Kashmir.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
