Physical DescriptionFramed painting on canvas inspired by the murals created by artist Sukumar Bose in the state corridor of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India. The painting consists of concentric rings of geometric and floral designs with shlokas (verses from the Bhagavad Gita) in gold, green, blue, burgundy, and pink hues. There are gold and burgundy motifs in each corner. The background is cream, with yellow, green, and burgundy lines around the border. The frame is gold with a gold mat.
Inscriptions and MarkingsText of note adhered to reverse: Presented to The Honorable Barack Obama, President of the United States of America on his State Visit to India by H’ble Shri Pranab Mukherjee, President of the Republic of India January 25, 2015 This painting, by Shri Jai Prakash, specialist in the art of Rajasthani miniature painting, is inspired by the murals of Sukumar Bose in the Rashtrapati Bhavan State Corridor. The ceiling of the State Corridor is decorated with motifs and figural forms in a rhythmic pattern in the tradition of the Bengali School. Slokas from the Bhagvadgita adorn the art work.
Historical NoteThis item was received on the occasion of the state visit by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to India from January 24 - 27, 2015.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
