Physical DescriptionSilver ornately engraved betel set consisting of a box with hinged lid (.b), an betel nut cutter (.b) a cylindrical container with lid (.c-d), and three identical containers on pedestals with lids (.e-f, .g-h, .i-j). The box is rectangular with beveled corners and wide, short feet. The inside of the lid and bottom of the inside are lined with blue velvet, and there is a silver divider in the main compartment. The betel nut cutter has two rod-shaped handles with a blade attached to the top handle. It is engraved to resemble the head of a dragon or bird.Historical NotePresented by the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei to President Barack Obama at the U.S.-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Sunnylands, California in February 2016.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
