Physical DescriptionFramed bronze-toned medallion. The medallion depicts the Liberty Bell with a minimalist depiction of a family atop the bell. Wrapped around the top of the bell are the words "WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES" and below the bell are the words "Philadelphia 2015" with the artist's name to the right of "2015." Below the medallion is a gold-toned pin depicting the Coat of Arms of Pope Francis.The medallion and pin are attached to a blue velour material that is surrounded by a wooden frame with a gold-toned and blue finish and an intentionally worn out look. The reverse of the frame has a stand that can fold out. Both the stand and back of the frame are covered in the same blue velour material as the front.
Historical NoteGiven during His Holiness Pope Francis' 2015 visit to Philadelphia for the 8th World Meeting of Families. He first stopped in Washington D.C. where he was greeted by President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden on September 22 and then he visited the White House on September 23. This was the first time the World Meeting of Families was held in the United States and also the first time that Pope Francis had been to the United States.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
