Physical DescriptionCobalt blue glass cup with a bell shape on a trumpet shaped base with colorful glass-enamel polychrome decorations. The design on the bowl depicts portraits of a bride and groom on opposite sides both enclosed in golden medallions. In between the portraits depicts scenes of a procession of courtiers on horseback and several women bathing in the Fountain of Love and Youth. Gilded leaf design decorates the negative space of the cup.
Historical NoteGift was received during the First Lady's visit to the Veneto Region of Italy where she held a Joining Forces event for military families stationed at the U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza base. The design of the cup is a replica of an original that is believed to have been made between 1470 and 1480, also of Venetian Murano glass, and made on the occasion of the wedding of a duke of Ferrara with a nobel lady of the Estense family.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to First Lady Michelle Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
