Physical DescriptionLacquerware trinket box (.a) with lid (.b) containing inlaid abalone and mother of pearl designs. The lid and outer walls of the box contain depictions of cranes and swirling leaf motifs throughout, with the background sections of the lid and outer walls containing mother of pearl. The center of the lid contains a depiction of a red, white, and green flower, with a black knob containing an inlaid abalone and mother of pearl flower attached at its center. The lid also contains an abalone meander border. The interior of the box is covered entirely in abalone, while the bottom of the box and lid is a solid black lacquer.

Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
