Physical DescriptionPrint of a painting that depicts a series of civil rights and African leaders standing in a field of flowers beginning with Emperor Menelik I of Ethiopia in the far distance and ending in President Barack Obama in the foreground on the left. In the middle distance behind a fence is a group of enslaved people picking cotton in a field. Immediately behind Barack and Michelle Obama are President Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks. The Capitol Building is depicted in the distance between the Obamas. In the lower right corner is a cut-out with a stained glass depiction of President Obama and a personal message. The frame is gold with tan and blue mats.
Historical NoteThe artwork is a replica of a mural on the side of Gospel Rescue Ministries, a homeless shelter in Washington DC.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Barack Obama during the Obama administration. It was received through the Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
