Physical DescriptionA facsimile of the Constitution of the Republic of Georgia arranged in a booklet. The booklet is housed inside of a dark brown wood box with a engraved knot design in the center and a small plaque on the bottom outside cover and inscription of a quote on the inside.
Inscriptions and MarkingsEngraved on top of box: Constitution of Georgia 1921 Text of plaque on lower obverse of box: To the President of the United States of America Barack Obama presented by Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia January 30, 2012 Text of plaque on interior of box: These two documents represent basic laws of the Democratic Republic of Georgia: The Act of Independence of Georgia and its Constitution. The National Council of Georgia declared independence in Ibilisi, on May 26, 1918. The Independence Act was confirmed in its integrity by the Constituent Assembly of Georgia - elected through direct, equal, universal, secret, and proportional vote by the citizens of both sexes - at its first session on March 12, 1919. At the same sitting, the Constituent Assembly entrusted a commission to draft the Republic's Constitution, giving a juridical framework to the already existing political governance within the institutions and constitutional practice in Georgia. This Commission completed its work by the end of 1920. The final text of the Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on February 22, 1921 when the Republic had already been attacked by Soviet Russ. Paris, February 1922.

Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
