Historical NoteThis sculpture of Martin Luther was one of 800 created by artist Ottmar Hörl for an art installation on Wittenberg, Germany's Market Square from August 14 to September 12, 2010. The installation, titled, "Martin Luther - Hier stehe ich..." (translated: Here I Stand), was commissioned by the Evangelical Church in Germany's office dedicated to commemorating the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation. Following the exhibition, the 800 red, green, black, and blue sculptures were distributed around the world.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Barack Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.
