Physical DescriptionDecorative gourd bowl painted with large floral motifs in red, blue, purple, and yellow. A single black flower is painted on the exterior bottom of the bowl. The lip of the bowl is a zigzag and the bottom of the lid is the reverse of the pattern allowing the two pieces to slot together. Black lines are painted following the zigzag on both the body of the bowl and the lid. Handles on the sides of the bowl and the top of the lid are made of blue and gold beads on thread.
Historical NoteReceived on behalf of President Barack Obama at the Ceremonies for the Independence of South Sudan in July 2011. This is the first gift given by the new government of South Sudan.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
