Physical DescriptionMetal repinique two-headed drum painted white, red, and black. The body of the drum is white with red triangles pointing down from the top and a red line in the center. Below the red line is a black line and there are black triangles pointing up from the bottom. Both the top and bottom heads of the drum are identical with the logo for the international Batala Brand, a stylized "B" in black, red and white, is in the cenner, triangle in a star shape framing the logo with additional green and yellow accents, and a black circle surrounding it containing the names of countries where the band has a unit. In red curving around the exterior of the circle is "Batala Banda de Percussao". On one side of the drum there is a black cord and on another there are red, white, and black wish ribbons ribbons printed with "Lem Senhor Do Bonfim Da Bahia".
Historical NoteReceived from the founder of the Brazilian branch of the women's percussion band Batalá, which performed at a cultural event for First Lady Michelle Obama on March 18, 2011 at the restaurant Oca ca Tribo in Brasilia, Brazil.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to First Lady Michelle Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
