Physical DescriptionBox containing three medals, two with ribbons and one pin back, attached to the red lining of the interior. The symbol on the medals depicts a sunbeam with the letters d, j, a, s, and a along the long points. The first ring is silver-toned cotton and rice, then a gold dotted ring, and then a circle split into four quarters of red and white. In one is a bull in red, a banyan tree in white, a chain in red, and cotton and rice in white. The inner circle is a gold star on a black background. The ribbon is blue and yellow.The exterior of the box depicts the Coat of Arms of Indonesia. It is an eagle with a shield on its chest that is holding a banner in its talons The banner reads, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika". The shield depicts a bull's head on red, a banyan tree on white, chain on red, and cotton and rice on white. Around the coat of arms and sides of the box it is decorated with ornate floral and leaf patterns.
Historical NoteThe Order of Bintang Jasa, the Indonesian Star of Service, is awarded for civil bravery and courage in times of adversity. The close lines of the stripes indicate that this is the 1st class award.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.
