Physical DescriptionMatted print of President John F. Kennedy meeting with members of the National Congress of American Indians following an address in the Rose Garden on March 5, 1963. He is speaking with Edison Real Bird, the Vice Chairman of the Crow Tribal Council, who is wearing a feathered headdress and embroidered vest and shirt cuffs. The President holds a Hopi Katsina ceremonial figure, and Edison Real Bird holds a peace pipe in one hand and a bundle of feathers in the other. The man wearing a suit and tie in the center is former Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall.
The mat is signed by six Native American Armed Forces Veterans, including Marine Gunnery Sergeant PJ James, Frank Chee Willetto and Bill Toledo.

Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a member of the general public to President Barack Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
