Physical DescriptionJewelry set made from recycled glass beads, set includes necklace (.a), two bracelets (.b-.c), and a pair of earrings (.d-.e), the necklace has eight little gold plated bronze rings between the center beads which are yellow, green and red with red bead separators, there is also a leaf shaped charm in the middle. The bracelets are in the same beaded pattern. The earrings are made from one yellow, green and red beads each with a gold plated bronze ring hanging under each bead.
Historical NoteAccording to a card provided with the gift, these recycled glass beads were made by Krobo people in Ghana. "The colors of the beads represent some of the colors of the Ghanaian flag: red, the blood and sacrifice of the ancestors, gold, the riches of the land, and green stands for the lush vegetation and fertility of the soil."
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to Sasha Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
