Physical DescriptionGold, enamel, and gemstone Collar of the Order of Abdul Aziz Al Saud on a gold chain. The medal is a seven-pointed star with laurel branches that alternate with the star's points. Inside the star is a green and white enamel seven-sided polygon around a white enamel circle with gold Arabic letters reading ‘Abdul-Aziz al-Saud’. The medal is attached to a gold emblem of Saudi Arabia consisting of a palm tree and crossed swords. This hangs from an ornate wide gold chain that features crossed swords and emerald and ruby embellishments.
Historical NoteThis medal was presented to President Barack Obama on June 3, 2009 by King Abdallah bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia upon conferral of the country's highest honor, the Collar of the Order of Abdul Aziz Al Saud, also known as the Order of Merit. The President wore this medal during the ceremony at the King's Farm in Riyadh during his first official visit to Saudi Arabia.
Custodial History / ProvenanceThe item was a gift from a foreign official to President Barack Obama during the Obama Administration. It was received through the Executive Office of the President and maintained there until its transfer to the National Archives in January 2017 for deposit with the Obama Presidential Library.Additional Details
