President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama traveled to San Salvador, El Salvador on March 22, 2011. President Obama met with President Mauricio Funes of El Salvador to discuss topics such as immigration and drug trafficking. President Obama later visited the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador and the tomb of Archbishop Óscar Romero, a major figure of the Salvadoran Civil War, and toured a Mayan ruin.

First Lady Michelle Obama met with First Lady Vanda Pignato of El Salvador to inaugurate the Ciudad Mujer, a women's center that aids victims of domestic violence and offers healthcare services and career training.
