The sixty-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly ran from September 13, 2011 to September 18, 2012 and was presided over by Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser of Qatar. The theme of the sixty-sixth session was "the role of mediation in the settlement of disputes by peaceful means.”

President Barack Obama attended the assembly from September 20 to September 21, 2011. President Obama presented a speech to the General Assembly on September 21, 2011 in which he discussed the Arab Spring, transitions of power in the Middle East, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
