The Summit of the Americas was started in 1994 as a gathering of heads of state and government leaders in North and South America to discuss policy issues and collaborate on shared actions to address challenges faced in the Americas.
The 5th Summit of the Americas was held at Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on April 17 through April 19, 2009. The theme of the summit was "Securing Our Citizens' Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability."
