President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and her husband, Joachim Sauer, to the White House for an official State Visit on June 7, 2011. The visit was the first for a European leader during the Obama administration, and highlighted the strong US-Germany relationship. At the State Dinner held in the Rose Garden, President Obama presented Chancellor Merkel with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest US civilian honor.
