The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an intergovernmental forum composed of independent member states from the Southeast Asia region. The objective of the forum is to promote economic growth, social progress, cultural development, and regional peace through security cooperation among its members. Although not a member of ASEAN, the United States participates as a “dialogue partner.”

President Obama attended the 2016 ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos from September 6 to September 8, 2016. The President announced an aid package to remove unexploded ordinances left over from the Vietnam War and declared a new partnership with Laos that would focus on development, education, nutrition, and trade. President Obama delivered remarks at a US-ASEAN Meeting and held a town hall with young Southeast Asian leaders to encourage entrepreneurship.
