The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an intergovernmental forum composed of independent member states from the Southeast Asia region. The objective of the forum is to promote economic growth, social progress, cultural development, and regional peace through security cooperation among its members. Although not a member of ASEAN, the United States participates as a “dialogue partner.”

President Obama attended the 2011 ASEAN Summit in Bali, Indonesia from November 17 through November 19, 2011. During the trip, President Obama celebrated a new sales deal between Boeing and an Indonesian airline, Lion Air. The President also participated in a US Embassy meet-and-greet and held bilateral talks with India, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
