The seventy-first session of the United Nations General Assembly ran from September 13, 2016 to September 12, 2017 and was presided over by Peter Thomson of Fiji. The theme of the seventy-first session was "The Sustainable Development Goals: A Universal Push to Transform our World."
President Barack Obama delivered a speech to the assembly on September 20, 2016 in which he highlighted eight years of international progress during his administration, including recovering from the financial crisis, creating climate change frameworks, and promoting diplomacy. The President also encouraged the countries to embrace integration through global cooperation.
