The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an intergovernmental forum composed of independent member states from the Southeast Asia region. The objective of the forum is to promote economic growth, social progress, cultural development, and regional peace through security cooperation among its members. Although not a member of ASEAN, the United States participates as a “dialogue partner.”

President Obama attended the 2016 ASEAN Summit in Sunnylands, California from February 15 through February 16, 2016. This was the first ASEAN summit to be held in the United States.
