First Lady's Visit to South Africa 2011
First Lady Michelle Obama, Malia and Sasha Obama, and Marian Robinson traveled to South Africa on June 21, 2011 to promote youth leadership, education, health and wellness. The First Lady started in Pretoria, South Africa, where she met with First Lady Nompumelelo Ntuli Zuma. The group then visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg, where they viewed Nelson Mandela’s personal archives. The Obamas then met with former President Nelson Mandela at his home in Houghton.
While in South Africa, First Lady Michelle Obama also visited a daycare center, toured the Apartheid Museum, and spoke at the US-sponsored Young African Women Leaders Forum. On her last day in South Africa, the First Lady visited Robben Island, where former President Nelson Mandela was held for the majority of his imprisonment, and met with Archbishop Desmond Tutu to promote HIV/AIDS education.
