In his Grant Park victory speech following the 2008 United States presidential election, President-Elect Barack Obama promised his daughters a new puppy to join them in the White House. In April 2009, Senator Ted Kennedy gifted the Obamas a six-month-old Portuguese Water Dog, named Bo by the family. Bo was later joined by Sunny, also a Portuguese Water Dog, and the pair were dubbed “The First Dogs” by the press. This collection includes impressive artwork of the duo, as well as a sampling of dog-related gifts given to the Obamas. The artifact depicted here is "Drawing of President Barack Obama and Bo" (DO.101435).
